Hunt for escaped murderers heats up near New York-Pennsylania line Posted: 21 Jun 2015 12:45 PM PDT Hundreds of law enforcement officers stepped up their search in western New York state for two convicted murderers who escaped from an upstate prison more than two weeks ago, as a third possible sighting of the men was reported in the area. The manhunt centered on the town of Friendship, located about 280 miles (450 km) southwest of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, where the escaped convicts were serving sentences for murder. Police set up a search perimeter in the Friendship area, in New York's so-called southern tier along the border with Pennsylvania, after two reported sightings on Saturday. |

Holloway, 45, a 22-year New Orleans police veteran and a father of three, was found in his department vehicle with a gunshot wound and his prisoner missing. When the suspect was taken into custody a day later, he still had handcuffs on him, though they were damaged, New Orleans Police Superintendent Michael Harrison told reporters. |
U.S. evangelicals draw battle lines against same-sex marriage Posted: 21 Jun 2015 06:34 AM PDT With the U.S. Supreme Court expected to rule by the end of the month on whether same-sex marriage is legal, many Christian evangelicals say they would refuse to obey a decision allowing gay unions. The Defend Marriage pledge, signed by more than 50,000 people, is one of a series of measures launched by social conservatives to push back against same-sex unions. "The justices are not always right, and this is clearly a case that finds a right that is not in the Constitution, and we will not be able to respect that ruling," said Rick Scarborough, a prominent Baptist pastor in Texas and one of the authors of the pledge. |

Racist manifesto linked to Charleston shooting suspect Posted: 20 Jun 2015 05:46 PM PDT By Edward McAllister, Luciana Lopez and Alana Wise CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters) - Dylann Roof, the suspect in Wednesday's church massacre in Charleston, appears to have written a racist manifesto, posing in photographs with a handgun and standing in front of a Confederate military museum and plantation slave houses. The Washington Post reported that U.S. officials have confirmed the website belonged to Roof. Many of the local landmarks shown in the photos appeared chosen to highlight Charleston's segregated past and to touch a nerve with the city's black community by singling out sites with a special importance and sensitivity in African-American history. |
