Texas officer in video let 'emotions get the better of him': lawyer Posted: 10 Jun 2015 01:00 PM PDT The Dallas-area policeman seen in a viral video throwing a bikini-clad black teenager to the ground was emotionally fraught at the time after responding to two suicide calls, and was not targeting minorities, his attorney said on Wednesday. McKinney Police Corporal Eric Casebolt, who is white, resigned on Tuesday after being seen in a video responding to a disturbance at a pool party on Friday where he appeared to target black youths, an incident that has added to concerns about racial bias in U.S. policing. "He never intended to mistreat anyone," lawyer Jane Bishkin told a news conference, adding that Casebolt hoped his resignation can bring healing. |
Los Angeles city council approves minimum wage hike Posted: 10 Jun 2015 12:42 PM PDT The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday gave final approval to an ordinance raising the minimum wage in America's second-largest city to $15 an hour by 2020 from the current $9. Eric Garcetti, would require businesses with more than 25 employees to gradually increase wages to meet a $15 hourly pay level by 2020, while smaller businesses would have an extra year to comply with each step. Garcetti, a Democrat, has said that he would sign the wage hike into law, seen as a victory for labor and community groups that have successfully pushed for similar pay hikes in other major U.S. cities, including Seattle and San Francisco. |

Mosby's request means she should be removed from the high-profile case, the Sun quoted the motion in Baltimore City Circuit Court as saying. |

New York inmates on the run for days face high odds of capture Posted: 10 Jun 2015 08:01 AM PDT The two escaped inmates from a New York maximum security prison have far outlasted the typical jailbreak period, according to experts and corrections data, as state and federal authorities were hunting them for the fifth straight day on Wednesday. "They invest a lot of time and effort in planning their escape," said Martin Horn, a former prison official in New York City and Pennsylvania who now lectures at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. |
Cheap, synthetic 'flakka' dethroning cocaine on Florida drug scene Posted: 10 Jun 2015 07:30 AM PDT For decades, South Florida has battled drug traffickers who ship boatloads of cocaine from South America. Now the region is dealing with a new epidemic - cheap, synthetic drugs that arrive from China through the mail. As authorities in the Sunshine State battle with the surge of Alpha-PVP, better known as "flakka" or "gravel," police departments have begun equipping officers with field detection kits, employing sniffer dogs at mail facilities and training patrol units to look for signs of delirium. |

As authorities searched for a fourth day for Matt, 48, and his fellow convicted killer David Sweat, 34, details emerged showing that the older inmate had twice tried to escape prison, once successfully. Large numbers of officers converged on Tuesday on the town of Willsboro, New York, about 40 miles (64 km) south of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, from which they had escaped, following a reported sighting of the pair. |

U.S. investigators determine Amtrak engineer cellphone use: sources Posted: 09 Jun 2015 07:30 PM PDT After weeks of sorting through complex and contradictory phone service data, U.S. investigators have determined whether an Amtrak engineer was using his cellphone last month when his train derailed along a curve in Philadelphia, two sources said on Tuesday. Investigators recently have been leaning toward the conclusion that 32-year-old engineer, Brandon Bostian, was not using the phone, sources said. Investigators have examined a range of evidence that could suggest either human error or a mechanical malfunction. |
Arkansas judge tells state to recognize hundreds of same-sex marriages Posted: 09 Jun 2015 05:39 PM PDT Arkansas must recognize as lawful some 500 same-sex marriages that were performed during a six-day window in May 2014, a state judge ruled on Tuesday. The marriages have been in legal limbo since the Arkansas Supreme Court halted gay marriages less than a week after they began in order to hear the state's appeal. A lower court had ruled that the state's ban on same-sex marriage violated the equal protection clauses of the Arkansas and U.S. Constitutions. |

In a rare interruption of the White House daily press briefing, reporters were hustled out of the room for about 30 minutes after a bomb threat was phoned in to local police. The Secret Service and bomb-sniffing dogs searched the premises and eventually gave the all-clear to resume the briefing by White House spokesman Josh Earnest. |
Commissioners walk out of meeting over police shooting of L.A. man Posted: 09 Jun 2015 01:34 PM PDT Los Angeles police commissioners meeting to decide whether two officers were justified in shooting an unarmed black man last year briefly walked out of the session on Tuesday after activists began chanting and holding signs. All five members of the Los Angeles Police Commission, who had said that they would halt the proceedings if activists became unruly, left the meeting for about 10 minutes during a tense public comment section. A line of more than a dozen police officers then stood at the front of the room, asking the crowd to calm down, before commissioners returned. |
