Richard Matt and David Sweat remained at large for a 10th day as more than 800 law enforcement officers combed dense woodlands near the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora in upstate New York. The governor announced that state Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott would conduct a thorough investigation to determine all factors involved in the escape. |

New trial begins for former S.C. police chief who shot black man Posted: 15 Jun 2015 05:13 AM PDT A second trial will begin on Monday for a former South Carolina police chief charged in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man, one of a series of cases that has raised questions about U.S. law enforcement's use of lethal force against minorities. The first trial of Richard Combs, a former police chief of tiny Eutawville, ended in January with the jury unable to reach a verdict after 12 hours of deliberations. Combs, who is white, faces a sentence of 30 years to life in prison without possibility of parole if convicted on the murder charge.Combs, then new to the job, fatally shot Eutawville resident Bernard Bailey, 54, in the town hall parking lot in 2011 after they argued and scuffled over a traffic ticket issued to Bailey's daughter.Judge Edgar Dickson recently agreed to move the second trial to the state capital, Columbia, at the request of defense attorneys. |

U.S., Venezuelan officials meet in Haiti, continue quiet diplomacy Posted: 14 Jun 2015 02:07 PM PDT A U.S. envoy has met Venezuela's second most powerful official in Haiti in a further sign of rapprochement between the ideological foes, according to Venezuelan state media. Thomas Shannon, counselor to Secretary of State John Kerry, has emerged in recent months as a go-between for Caracas and Washington, visiting Venezuela a couple of times for low-profile meetings with President Nicolas Maduro. In the worst flare-up since Maduro came to power, Venezuela earlier this year accused Washington of plotting a coup, ordered it to reduce its embassy staff and imposed a visa requirement on U.S. visitors. |
FIFA official urges Blatter not to go back on quit promise Posted: 14 Jun 2015 01:51 PM PDT The head of FIFA's audit and compliance unit said on Sunday that changes at the top of world football's governing body were "indispensable" following reports Sepp Blatter might go back on his decision to resign. Scala's statement came after Swiss newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag cited an anonymous source close to Blatter as saying he had not ruled out the prospect of going back on his decision to resign after receiving messages of support from Asian and African federations. |
