Police spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider said Capitol Police received the call and are investigating a report of suspicious package in room G-40 of the Dirksen building, part of the complex near the U.S. Capitol. "Several floors in the (Dirksen building) have been evacuated as a precaution while the USCP continues to investigate," Schneider said in a statement.


U.S. appeals court upholds restrictive Texas abortion law

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday upheld the main provisions of a restrictive Texas abortion law, including one that requires clinics to meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit allowed for the law to be applied across the state but set up an exception for a clinic in the southern city of McAllen. The move, a signal of distrust in the community toward the authorities handling the case, represents an attempt to bypass the local prosecutor's office by using an obscure Ohio state law that allows citizens to request an arrest. According to an indictment, Hastert, 73, was trying to evade detection of $3.5 million in payments he had promised to make to someone from his hometown of Yorkville, Illinois, to conceal past misconduct against the person. Law enforcement officials have said that the misconduct Hastert was trying to cover up was sexual contact with a male, according to reports in national media outlets.

(Reuters) - A federal judge in Louisiana on Monday ordered the release of the last of the prisoners known as the "Angola Three," who has spent more than four decades in solitary confinement in connection with the 1972 second-degree murder of a prison guard. U.S. District Judge James Brady ruled Albert Woodfox, 68, be released and barred from being tried a third time, following overturned convictions for the killing of prison guard Brent Miller. "This court exercises its discretion in finding that there are exceptional circumstances, and the only just remedy is an unconditional writ of habeas corpus barring retrial of Mr. Albert Woodfox and releasing Mr. Woodfox from custody immediately," Brady said in his 27-page ruling.

(Reuters) - Two Southern California men pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of conspiring to travel to the Middle East to join the militant group Islamic State, the Los Angeles Times reported. The arrests last month of Anaheim residents Muhanad Badawi and Nader Elhuzayel, both 24, are among a string of cases showing a crackdown by U.S. authorities on individuals they believe are seeking to join the group. The pair pleaded not guilty to the charge of conspiring "to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization" filed in federal court in Orange County, California, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Psychiatrist Jeffrey Metzner testified that after interviewing Holmes for more than 25 hours he determined that the onetime neuroscience graduate student met the criteria for sanity under Colorado law. (Reuters) - The whistleblower in a Penn State University fraternity scandal tied to a private Facebook group featuring photographs of nude and apparently unconscious female students has sued the school and fraternity, according to court documents released on Monday. James Vivenzio says he was subjected to life-threatening hazing, which included being burned by cigarettes and forced to drink bucketfuls of alcohol mixed with vomit and urine while pledging for Kappa Delta Rho, according to the complaint filed in the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia. Penn State last month shut down its Kappa Delta Rho chapter for three years over the private Facebook entries, as well as accusations of hazing and other misconduct.

(Reuters) - A Maryland legislative task force began hearings on Monday on law-enforcement reforms, spurred by the death of a black man from injuries in Baltimore police custody. Many lawmakers hope that the death of Freddie Gray, 25, which caused protests and rioting in Baltimore in April, can galvanize the Democratic-controlled state Assembly into passing police reforms that have stalled in the statehouse. Maryland is among a number of states grappling with reforms amid allegations of police brutality, especially against black men.
