Handout shows police officers using a dog while searching for explosives outside the police headquarters in Dallas, Texas(Reuters) - Shots were fired from what was described as an armored van in an attack on Dallas Police headquarters early on Saturday, police said, and an explosive device was found outside the building. Dallas Police Chief David Brown told reporters that a motive for the attack was not yet known. The police chief said when police responded to reports of automatic gunfire, the van rammed a squad car and at least one person began shooting.

Joyce Mitchell, an industrial training supervisor at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, was arrested on suspicion of having smuggled contraband into the prison, from which convicts Richard Matt and David Sweat escaped last weekend, authorities said. Mitchell, 51, is charged with promoting prison contraband and criminal facilitation, according to the New York State Police.

Rachel Dolezal, 37, serves as chair of Spokane's independent police ombudsman commission, and identified herself as white, African-American and Native American when applying for the job, City Council President Ben Stuckart said in an interview on Friday. Dolezal is also president of the Spokane chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization.

Hastert had allegedly paid close to $2 million to an individual to conceal past misconduct, which was reportedly sexual contact with a male student while he was a teacher and coach in the 1960s and 1970s. In a motion filed before Judge Thomas Durkin, who is hearing the Hastert case, prosecutors said sensitive information in the case should not be disseminated because it would "adversely affect ... the privacy interests of third parties" and also said that Hastert's defense attorneys do not oppose the motion.
