Massachusetts' Kennedy Institute offers window on U.S. Senate Posted: 13 Jun 2015 04:23 AM PDT By Elizabeth Barber BOSTON (Reuters) - One young senator had to be prodded out of a nap. A Republican congresswoman alleged that Democrats must "enjoy spending money." There was talk of a filibuster. This could have been the U.S. Senate, were it not for one thing: it went on to pass a massive immigration-reform bill this week. "We compromised," said Tacora Mcneil Davis, a high school student playing a Republican Senator in a mock legislative session at Boston's Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. |

Clinton to stage major rally, will vow to back working Americans Posted: 12 Jun 2015 10:23 PM PDT By Jonathan Allen NEW YORK (Reuters) - Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton stages the first big rally of her presidential campaign on Saturday, trying to cast herself as a fighter for ordinary Americans and build a clearer case for why she wants to lead the country. Running to be the first female president, Clinton will trumpet her record on women's rights and talk about her mother's tough upbringing in a speech to thousands of supporters on New York's Roosevelt Island. The former first lady is also expected to outline her policies on economic issues such as trade and Wall Street reform that could trip her up as she fends off primary challenges from liberal Democrats. |

Documents show bitter CIA dispute over pre-9/11 performance Posted: 12 Jun 2015 04:09 PM PDT Top CIA officials fought bitterly in the years after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks over whether U.S. intelligence agencies could have done more to stop the deadliest terrorist strikes in American history, documents released on Friday show. The once-secret documents include a more complete version of a 2005 report by the spy agency's inspector general, which found that the CIA did not have a comprehensive strategy or marshal adequate resources to combat al Qaeda before hijacked planes hit New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon on 9/11. At stake in the years-long dispute are the legacies of former top CIA officials and the agency itself. |
Prosecutors move to keep Hastert evidence secret Posted: 12 Jun 2015 03:01 PM PDT Federal prosecutors on Friday petitioned a judge to keep secret their evidence in the case against former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, who pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to charges of trying to hide cash transactions and lying to the FBI about it. Hastert had allegedly paid close to $2 million to an individual to conceal past misconduct, which was reportedly sexual contact with a male student while he was a teacher and coach in the 1960s and 1970s. In a motion filed before Judge Thomas Durkin, who is hearing the Hastert case, prosecutors said sensitive information in the case should not be disseminated because it would "adversely affect ... the privacy interests of third parties" and also said that Hastert's defense attorneys do not oppose the motion. |
