Wave of grisly Islamist attacks shocks world during Ramadan Posted: 26 Jun 2015 11:00 AM PDT From a mass shooting at a Tunisian beach resort to a severed head displayed in a French town, a wave of grisly attacks Friday shocked the world days after the Islamic State group urged supporters to carry out Ramadan attacks. There was no apparent link between the attacks, but IS claimed a suicide bombing at a Shiite mosque in Kuwait in which 25 people were killed, and Islamist flags were found at the site of the French attack. The IS jihadists were also accused by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights of killing 146 civilians in an offensive on the Kurdish town of Kobane. |

U.S. top court rules for white supremacist over sentencing Posted: 26 Jun 2015 08:15 AM PDT The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday threw out part of a tough federal criminal sentencing law for being overly broad in a ruling that backed a Minnesota white supremacist who challenged his sentence on a firearms crime. The court ruled in favor of Samuel Johnson, who was given 15 years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm. The justices found on a 6-3 vote that a sentencing provision of the federal Armed Career Criminal Act is so expansive that it violated the U.S. Constitution's Fifth Amendment, which mandates due process under the law. |

Obamacare ruling puts Supreme Court on hot seat in U.S. presidential race Posted: 25 Jun 2015 10:15 PM PDT By James Oliphant WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Infuriated by a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that kept President Barack Obama's healthcare program intact, conservative activists and Republican presidential candidates vowed on Thursday to make the role of the high court a central issue in the 2016 presidential election. Conservative ire was trained particularly on Chief Justice John Roberts, who wrote the majority opinion that preserved the subsidy regime underpinning the Affordable Care Act, even though another Republican appointee, Justice Anthony Kennedy, also voted with the majority. Roberts, who was appointed to the court by Republican President George W. Bush, has voted with court conservatives on many landmark cases, including ones involving campaign-finance laws and voting rights. |

Central Park restaurant sued for sexual, racial harassment Posted: 25 Jun 2015 02:13 PM PDT The suit, filed in U.S. district court in Manhattan by Akira Smalls, alleges the manager at the Loeb Boathouse made a series of boastful and graphic sexual comments to her, including asking her whether she had any sexually transmitted diseases, and the restaurant's chef got her drunk in a bid to have sex with her. The pricey restaurant, which opened in the 1950s, sits on the tip of the lake in the middle of Central Park, near its famous angel-topped Bethesda Fountain. When she complained to the owners in 2013 about sexual comments by the manager, James Modena, she was told he would not be fired, according to the suit. |
