New York prison escapee turns 35 on ninth day of manhunt

Sunday also marked the 35th birthday of David Sweat, the younger of the two convicted killers who broke out of Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora by cutting through a steel wall and slithering through a steam pipe to a manhole on the street outside the prison's walls. Sweat and Richard Matt, 48, were discovered missing from their adjoining cells in the maximum security prison, located about 20 miles (32 km) south of the Canadian border, at 5:30 a.m. on June 6.

"We will pre-position significant equipment," the official said, commenting on a New York Times report that the Pentagon was poised to store battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and other heavy weapons for as many as 5,000 troops. Virginia officer indicted in killing of black man released on bond

Norfolk Police officer Michael Edington Jr., 25, was charged this week with voluntary manslaughter over the June 6, 2014 shooting death of 35-year-old David Latham. Edington said Latham had threatened him with a knife, the Virginia Pilot newspaper reported. Edington, who was indicted by a special grand jury on Thursday, was booked into jail and released on his own recognizance without having to post a cash bond, the Pilot reported.

Abbott, a Republican, said the measures secure Texans' rights to bear arms guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment. "Today, I am proud to expand liberty in the Lone Star State," Abbott said in a statement.
