NY escape highlights relationships between inmates, prison employees Posted: 16 Jun 2015 02:13 PM PDT Reports that a sexual relationship had developed between two escaped New York inmates and a prison employee who has been charged with helping them break out 11 days ago illustrates the difficulties of policing relationships within prisons. The problem of sex between prisoners and staff is well documented and enough of a concern that New York set up a special statewide office in 1996 to investigate and prevent it. Joyce Mitchell, 51, was charged this week with providing chisels and hacksaws to convicted murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat, who were found missing from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, near the Canadian border on June 6. |
New York appeals court hears arguments over grand jury records in chokehold death Posted: 16 Jun 2015 01:26 PM PDT A New York state appeals court heard arguments on Tuesday over unsealing minutes of a grand jury that declined to indict a white New York police officer in the chokehold death of an unarmed black man. A coalition of groups seeking release of the transcripts told the four-judge panel that grand jury secrecy undermined confidence in the justice system and hampered debate among state lawmakers weighing grand jury reforms. The groups, which included the Legal Aid Society, want the appeals court to overturn a Staten Island justice's decision in March to bar release of records of the grand jury that probed the death of Eric Garner, 43, last year. |
Psychiatrist: Colorado movie gunman gave no sign of massacre plans Posted: 16 Jun 2015 12:38 PM PDT A university psychiatrist who treated Colorado movie massacre gunman James Holmes before the rampage said at his murder trial on Tuesday that Holmes had homicidal thoughts but gave no indication he was planning the attack. In much-anticipated testimony in a courtroom on the outskirts of Denver, Dr. Lynne Fenton described meeting with the defendant several times when she was medical director for student mental health services at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Fenton told a pre-trial hearing in 2013 her professional relationship with Holmes ended in mid-June the year before when he lost access to the campus after threatening a professor. |
Accused murderer defends self in dismembered New Orleans dancer case Posted: 16 Jun 2015 12:21 PM PDT A man accused of murdering and dismembering a New Orleans nightclub dancer represented himself in court on Tuesday, telling jurors in his opening statement that he was innocent. Terry Speaks, 42, faces charges that he and his then-girlfriend stabbed dancer Jaren Lockhart to death in the early morning of June 6, 2012, and then cut up her body and threw it off a bridge near the Mississippi Gulf Coast. A grand jury in 2014 charged Speaks and Margaret Sanchez with second-degree murder, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice. |
U.S. official suspects cyber attack occurred in 2014 Posted: 16 Jun 2015 09:27 AM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management said on Tuesday that officials suspected a cyber attack that affected millions of employee records took place in 2014. "We suspect that it happened earlier, in 2014," Katherine Archuleta testified at a hearing of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Real estate mogul Trump says he is running for president Posted: 16 Jun 2015 09:10 AM PDT By Alana Wise NEW YORK (Reuters) - Real estate mogul and TV personality Donald Trump said on Tuesday he is a candidate for the Republican nomination in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Eleven Republicans have announced they are running for next November's election, the latest being former Florida Governor Jeb Bush who launched his candidacy on Monday. |
Woman's getaway car scheme was 'Plan B' in NY prison escape: sheriff Posted: 16 Jun 2015 08:16 AM PDT A female prison worker's agreement to drive a getaway car for two escaped inmates was "Plan B" and the convicted killers had another plot that allowed them to flee, Clinton County Sheriff David Favro said. Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 35, both convicted of murder, remained at large for an 11th day on Tuesday after busting out of Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, about 20 miles (32 km) south of the Canadian border. Authorities said Joyce Mitchell, an industrial training supervisor in the prison tailor shop who has been criminally charged in the escape, had agreed to drive the getaway car but got cold feet and never showed up. |

Tropical Storm Bill bears down on Texas coast Posted: 16 Jun 2015 03:53 AM PDT Tropical Storm Bill hurtled toward the Texas coast from the Gulf of Mexico early on Tuesday with heavy rains and strong winds, the National Weather Service said, weeks after floods killed about 30 people in the state. Flash flood watches were in effect for central Texas and the Houston area, regions where floods last month swallowed thousands of vehicles and damaged homes. The storm was projected to hit the coast at Matagorda Bay and churn through central Texas toward Austin. |

Most Americans want Congress to ensure Obamacare subsidies: poll Posted: 16 Jun 2015 12:17 AM PDT A majority of Americans say Congress should make sure Obamacare subsidies to buy health insurance are available nationwide if the Supreme Court rules that the payments in at least 34 states are illegal, according to a poll released on Tuesday. The Kaiser Family Foundation poll surveyed 1,200 people from June 2 to June 9 in both English and Spanish. The Supreme Court is expected to rule this month whether subsidies provided to states that rely on the federal government's HealthCare.gov insurance exchange are legal based on the requirements of President Barack Obama's healthcare law. |

Alaska wildfires destroy dozens of homes, menace highway Posted: 15 Jun 2015 11:11 PM PDT By Steve Quinn JUNEAU, Alaska (Reuters) - Two fast-spreading Alaska wildfires have forced a series of evacuations, destroyed up to 45 homes and forced authorities to restrict traffic on a major highway connecting two of the state's largest cities, state officials said on Monday. As many as 200 firefighters have been battling a 6,500-acre fire about 40 miles (64 km) north of Anchorage since Sunday afternoon. About 137 miles (220km) south of Anchorage, crews are fighting a much smaller, but equally dangerous blaze that threatens nearly 200 homes. |

Man held for trial in sledgehammer killings of California family Posted: 15 Jun 2015 05:48 PM PDT A California judge ruled on Monday that prosecutors had presented sufficient evidence for an ex-convict to face trial in the 2010 sledgehammer killings of a family of four whose remains were found more than two years later buried in the desert. The decision capped a daylong preliminary hearing in the case against Charles "Chase" Merritt, 58, described by authorities as a former business associate of the slain father, Joseph McStay. San Bernardino County Superior Court Judge Michael Smith said that evidence outlined by investigators in the proceedings, including cell phone records and DNA analysis, had established probable cause for prosecutors to proceed to trial. |

Dolezal, 37, who served as president of the Spokane chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization, said the controversy over her race had shifted dialogue away from key social and political issues. "It is with complete allegiance to the cause of racial and social justice and the NAACP that I step aside from the presidency and pass the baton to my vice president, Naima Quarles-Burnley," Dolezal said in a statement on the NAACP Spokane chapter's Facebook page. |
